Todd Mcfarlane is taking big risks these days, but at least he's in the driver's seat all the way; not only did he create Spawn back in the 90's, but he is writing the script and directing the upcoming film as well. It's a lot to take on, especially for someone who has never directed before, but he certainly has a concrete vision of what he wants, evidenced by the interview below (courtesy of SYFY WIRE).
In the video, he discusses his excitement at landing Jaime Foxx and Jeremy Renner, how he values practical effects over CGI (YES!) and a bit on some of his influences, both on his creation of the famous hellspawn and in monster movie making, specifically monster transformations (his favorite monster transformation is in the original An American Werewolf). He also discusses his disinterest in making a "traditional superhero flick" and he's been on message with that point for some time; all the way back in August 2013, McFarlane discussed his progress with the script, stating that the film would be "more of a horror movie and a thriller movie, not a superhero one".
Although an official plot has not been released, we do know that Spawn is going to be a horror/thriller movie and will focus on Twitch (Renner) and his partner Sam, detectives shown prominently in the comics, with Spawn being planned to serve as more of a background character.
Check out the great interview below to get into McFarlane's head a bit on where he wants the direction of this flick to go. Spawn will hopefully begin production in June.
