I loved these as a kid, and I actually discovered one in my closet the other day (volume three, I believe) and found a lot of the stories still quite enjoyable, although some are a bit repetitive in a "yell "gotcha" at the end" type of way. Regardless, this upcoming flick, helmed by academy award winner Guillermo del Toro and director André Øvredal is based on the iconic book series, allowing them to jam many of the freaky tales into one film.

The movie takes place in 1968 America. Change is coming to the US, but far removed from the rampant unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed over the populace. There, in the dilapidated Bellows mansion on the edge of town, a young girl named Sarah, a youth with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home.

Check out the trailer below, and see how many of the stories you recognize. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark releases August 9, 2019.
