Anyone who grew up in the late 80s/early 90s is going to remember the Disney show DuckTales, and there's probably no one who doesn't know who Scrooge McDuck is. In 1990, Capcom released an NES game that would become one of their most successful titles of the era. DuckTales Remastered is a revamped version of this classic title, available for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. We tested the iOS version, so check out our review below.

Uncle Scrooge's treasure hunt

The Beagles Boys once again have their sights set on Scrooge McDuck's Money Bin. They blow their way through the front door and take Scrooge's nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie hostage. It's up to you as Uncle Scrooge to rescue your nephews and and chase the Beagle Boys out of the Money Bin. A few minutes later, the boys are safe and you make your way to the entrace of the Bin itself. When you get there, Big Time Beagle is waiting for you, and he's not going to give up without a fight.

Once you've defeated Big Time, you notice he's left a painting on the table, which you promptly investigate. It turns out that this is no ordinary picture – it's a treasure map. The map shows shows five locations, each of which is supposed to be the site of a hidden treasure. Since there's nothing Scrooge McDuck loves more than precious treasures, you set out with your nephews to find the them. The adventure will takes you to the Amazon, to Transylvania, to the Himalayas, the African Mines, and even to the Moon.

In terms of story, they haven't really added anything that wasn't in the original version. This is where I think they missed an opportunity to make the game better.

Pogo stickin' it

Scrooge is controlled using a D-Pad on the touch screen, along with a jump button and an attack button. He can attack by swinging his cane while on the ground (which he can also use to hurl objects), and also by using it like a pogo stick to hop on enemies.

Using these two attacks, you make your way through each level beating up the bad guys, and in exchange some of them will drop money in the form of diamonds of various sizes or health in the form of muffins. You can also use the two attacks to open treasure chests, which contain money.

If at some point your luck runs out and you die, it's not such a dig deal if you're playing on "Easy", since you just restart in the same scene. But on "Medium" or "Hard", you have to restart the level from the beginning. Depending on how fast you go, and how often you die, the game takes a good three to five hours to complete.

Good as new

It's been almost 25 years since the original DuckTales game came out, so the most noticeable thing about DuckTales Remastered is the graphics, of course. Characters and objects have been redesigned with great attention to detail, and the different levels have carried over well to the new platform, each with a distinctive feel: Transylvania all dark and grim, the Amazon brimming with color and life.

Currently voice-overs are English-only, with interface and subtitles available in German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese. And rounding it all off is the DuckTales theme that plays at the beginning of the game, which lots of us still have seared in our memories.

Summary

I really had a lot of fun with DuckTales Remastered. It was so cool to hear the title music after all these years since I watched the show on TV as a kid. The controls work well, and everything looks really good. I think they could have a done a better job localizing the game into other languages, though, not least because the characters' names are so different ("Scrooge McDuck" is "Dagobert Duck" in German, "Balthazar Picsou" in French, etc.). All in all, I can say that DuckTales Remastered is a good game to play for a few hours. Whether those few hours are worth $9.99 ($14.99 for the PC version) is something you're going to have to decide for yourself. (Dominik Probst; translation by Chase Faucheux)
