Anno 2205, the latest installment in Ubisoft’s popular Anno series (formerly the A.D. series in the US), is the second one to take players to the not-so-distant future, introducing a ton of new features in the process. Keep reading to see if that old Anno feel translates over to this brave new world.
The Neverending Story
Earth is in the midst of an energy crisis, and the colonization of the moon appears to be the only way forward – a task that falls to you, the player. As head of a new company, your first task is to build a base of operations on earth, from which you will be able to launch moon missions with the ultimate goal of building fusion reactors there. But your mission is not an easy one. The Orbital Watch, descendants of the first wave of colonists, are none too pleased with the plans of the Global Union, a consortium of the most powerful companies on earth, to use the moon in order to save the earth. It doesn’t take long for the first clashes to erupt in a conflict that is not to be solved except by force of arms. You will need to rely on your economic and diplomatic skills in order to succeed, but most of all, you’re going to have to be a bold.
Bigger, More Expansive, Better?
If you’re familiar with the Anno series, you know what to expect: a small island with a warehouse, and all the freedom you could ask of a building menu. A major difference compared to the previous games is that in Anno 2205 is that you don’t have to vie for land resources against your AI components on a single, large map – instead, you’re able to choose one of three distinct starting regions with their own unique conditions and challenges where you can build stuff all by yourself. Once you’ve decided, the gameplay is similar to other games in the series: build structures, put down roads, and satisfy the needs of your population. Start small, and slowly but surely expand your presence on the map. Over time it will get harder and harder to satisfy the demands of the population under your rule, and each new civilization level requires new goods that get more and more difficult to produce. At once point, your people might be demanding neural implants or other bionic upgrades. “Super alloys” are required to build the Space Elevator, and Helium 3 can only be mined on the moon. The possibilities for expansion are not just limited to the islands on the map, but also extend to other climate zones like the Arctic, not to mention the moon itself. Doing the Arctic right takes a lot of planning, and it’s not for neat freaks. Housing has to be built right next to factories, which are the only source of warmth in this harsh and punishing environment.
And when you colonize the moon, you need to worry about protecting your settlements against meteors, and oxygen becomes one of the most important resources of all. It’s imperative that you establish trade routes between your individual settlements, but they’re relatively easy to set up and manage. As your population rises and your economy flourishes, your company’s value will also increase along with your corporation level. Eventually you’ll be able to gain access to a Space Elevator by performing certain tasks, and thus, to the Global Union’s space station, which also serves as a “World Market”. If you get in good with them and do what they ask you to do, it won’t take long before you get permission to colonize the moon. After that, one of most important things will be to manage your economy well so that you can build the much sought-after fusion reactor. But even when you manage to pull off this game-changing achievement, you’re still not finished. Anno 2205 has no open gameplay mode, so you essentially just keep playing the campaign indefinitely. They’ve done away with multiplayer for this game, too, but making up for it are as many side-quests as craters on the moon, which are guaranteed to keep you occupied for a while. They also don’t force you to be online, which is awesome, though you do need to have a Uplay account. And if you want to delve deeper into the trade system, you can go online and peddle your wares to other players. All it takes is a little bit of skill and a sense of what’s about to be in high demand, and you can do pretty well for yourself.
Lots of Eye Candy
Anno 2205 has a lot to offer in terms of graphics. The water looks amazing, no matter if you’re looking at it from a distance or close up. The terrain, mountains, forests, icebergs, and moon craters are really detailed and extremely realistic. Buildings like housing facilities, factories, and spaceports fit in seamlessly with the futuristic design and go so well together they could easily make you start daydreaming about the future. But if you really want to enjoy the graphics in all their glory, you’re going to need to have a high-performance graphics card. The machine I played the game on sports a Radeon R9 290 (late 2013), and it really had to struggle to display over 10 fps when I tried to play in full HD at the highest graphics settings.
Talk to Me
You come into contact with several different characters during the game, all of whom feature voiceovers that really match the way they look. And like in any good game of this type, the music is appropriate for the gameplay. Some of the pieces are really well done, but a few of them can also get kind of annoying after a little while. Other sound effects include the roaring of the waves in the ocean, the sound of your command ship’s engines, and the sound of the guns on your attack ships in their clashes with the Orbital Watch, all of which are impressive right on to the end.
