Trinium Wars, from South Korean developers Hanmaru Soft, brings together two of the most popular MMO genres – it’s a classic MMORPG, but the PvP aspects play more like a MOBA. You really could see how such a mix would have its appeal, provided the cross-section of MMORPG fans and MOBA fans is big enough to support a stable fan community. Trinium Wars is currently in Early Access on Steam, where you can get it for just $4.99 if you’re intrigued by the concept and want to get started right away.
The 100 + Aliens
Trinium Wars paints a pretty bleak picture of the world at the start of the game: 200 years ago, World War III almost wiped mankind off the face of the earth. No more than a few thousand refugees were able to escape into space, with hopes of one day repopulating the devastated planet. When these exiles do arrive back, however, they are surprised to find that despite the high levels of radiation and years and years of nuclear winter, several species have actually managed to survive. Okay, yeah most of them have mutated into grotesque versions of their former selves, but this is a pretty clever move on the developers’ part, as it gives them the freedom to integrate fantasy creatures into the game, even though it’s not fantasy, but sci-fi. And those that remained are having a hard time understanding how or why they might make room for the ones just now coming back home. Sounds a lot like the TV series The 100? Yup, except that in this case, at almost exactly the same time the humans are returning from space, an alien species known as the Narc are also attempting to colonize the, having depleted all the resources on their home planet. Players are given the choice of playing on the side of the humans from space, or whether they want to join forces with the alien Narc.
Class Warfare
Right after you decide on a faction, they ask you to choose your character’s class – Warrior, Ghost, or Esper. The heavily armored warrior uses automatic weapons for his ranged attacks and a two-handed sword when he steps into the fray. The Ghost uses only light armor, but he’s able to blend into his surroundings and strike from hiding like a rogue or an assassin, dealing massive damage with both ranged and melée attacks. Ghosts also have the ability to control enemies. The Esper is the “magic” class – he’s able to use powerful psionic skills, but at the expense of weak damage and armor. Once you’ve chosen your class and decided on your character's appearance, you can begin the game in your faction’s starting zone. This part of Trinium Wars is pretty much the same as in any other MMORPG that’s been made since World of Warcraft came out – you go around looking for floating exclamation points above the heads of various NPCs to find available quests, which encourages you to go out and explore the area. Most of them are standard genre fare: kill this, gather that, escort this or that character, rescue the ones over there, defend this place, hold your ground, etc. At the same time, they let you use vehicles pretty early in the game, either as part of certain quests or just to get around more quickly on your own, which adds a lot of variety to the game. Certain help features are also integrated right into the game – for example, the game always lets you know what direction you need to go in and how far it is to your destination, which mens no more tedious searching around.
Non-Stop
Combat in Trinium Wars is pretty fast-paced, but it manages to keep from ever getting too hectic. Like in any classic MMORPG, you can arrange your special attacks according to your own priorities, making it easy to use them one after another in combat. Usually, your enemies will be lying dead in the dirt long before a skill’s cooldown is up and it’s ready to use again. Grab some loot real quick, and then it’s on to the next one. In Trinium Wars you’re never forced to take a break for your character to rest or to heal – health regenerates so fast that your hero’s almost always back in tip-top shape before meeting his next opponent.Unfortunately, Trinium Wars isn’t much to look at. Even ten years ago nobody would have called these graphics good. Choppy animation sequences, washed-out and dull landscapes, a lack of detail in both creatures and characters – the graphics are an eyesore. If you care about graphics even a little bit, this game isn’t really going to be your thing.
A Different Take on PvP
Trinium Wars features two different kinds of PvP action, one of which is like a typical MOBA. The human and Narc teams come in on opposite sides of the map, supported by multiple NPCs streaming out of their respective bases. These drones attack one another in the middle, wiping each other out, if a hero hasn’t taken them out beforehand. The side that manages to destroy the other team’s main structure is the winner. If you’re a fan of small teams that play well together, this game’s a good place to find that kind of thing. At this particular time, there are still some PvP balancing issues, as the three classes are not equally matched. The heavily armored Warriors are very hard to beat, and seem to deal way too much damage relative to the other classes. This is one place where Hanmaru Soft is going to have to make some changes. The second kind of PvP is the game’s namesake – the two factions battle each other over the resource Trinium, with up to a thousand players clashing with one another throughout the war zone. But it’s not like you’re just fighting without rhyme or reason – each faction builds its own buildings, and can even produce tanks that are able to do more damage from a distance than player characters, with more damage resistance to boot. The range of different strategies available are as diverse as any RTS game, though it’s significantly harder to coordinate the various individual units. At the moment, there aren’t enough players in Trinium Wars to fill up even half the battlefield, but that’s something that can change after the Early Access period is over and the game is actually released.
You Better Pay for That!
In its Early Access state, Trinium Wars costs a mere five bucks, with no subscription fees. You can also get the Deluxe Edition for $14.99, or the Collector’s Edition for $34.99, both of which have the advantage of special in-game items and a 30-day bonus. So wait, does that make this a pay-to-win game? No, the bonuses really don’t give you that much of an edge; they just make it so that you don’t have to spend too much time grinding. Without the bonuses, it will just take you a little longer to do some things, and your pockets will be a little emptier. It’s the same with the in-game items, which you can also buy in the game for real money. Anyway, there really isn’t anything about the game that’s pay-to-win. So why should anyone choose to play Trinium Wars when there are several better alternatives out there, like Rift, Tera, Aion, or WildStar? Well, the PvP aspects might be enough to tip the scales, provided Trinium Wars is able to find a wide enough fan base so that there’s always something going on on its battlefields.
