Star Trek: Alien Domain

Star Trek: Alien Domain is a brand-new officially licensed game connected to the events and characters in the Star Trek: Voyager series. This 2D browser title boldly goes where no … browser game has gone before.

Story

You’re on a special mission out in the extradimensional realm known as “fluidic space”. The vessel USS Voyager has encountered a new race, Species 8472, and Starfleet Command wants to know more about this potential threat.

Gameplay

In order to do this, you will need to venture out deeper into space, building outposts as you go. Outposts supply your fleet with resources such as the deuterium fuel you’ll need to explore with your ships. As you build up your base and your fleet, you’ll gain access to additional sectors where the ships of Species 8472 lie in wait, but not only them – the forces of the enemy faction, either Klingon or Federation, may also be standing in your way. The two factions are player-controlled, while Species 8472 is controlled by the computer. At the beginning of the game, you can decide which faction you will belong to, and a short tutorial and video will explain the basic controls and the like.

After an engagement with the enemy, the mission system lets you know the next thing you’ll have to build or the next target you’ll have to destroy. After a few missions, you’ll be able to enter new areas on the star map, where you’ll have your first encounters with enemy factions. From that point on, the difficulty increases pretty rapidly. PvP battles can become really frustrating really quickly, which makes them less fun. The most negative aspect here is that players who spend a lot of money can easily become way more powerful than others, even at the lower levels. The more Credits a player buys, the more quickly they’re able to expand their base and their fleet, even before they’ve really done anything in the game.

Battles against the computer, on the other hand, are pretty well balanced. The further out you venture, the more powerful they get, but by that time you’ll have been completing missions and getting better ships, weapons, etc. as well. If you follow the normal course of the game, you’ll always have a real chance of beating computer-controlled enemies. This provides the impetus for completing missions and other tasks. There are also special events intended to keep you motivated; for example, the boss battle that forces the Federation and Klingons to put aside their differences and unite against their common enemy.

Multiplayer

Star Trek: Alien Domain is a purely online game, with few single-player missions. There are currently over 90 servers, but the number is steadily increasing. New players should try to log into the newest server in order to ensure a decent connection.

Controls

The game is primarily played using the mouse. In combat, you can use the Q, W, and E keys to activate special abilities more quickly. These abilities are divided into weapons and ship abilities. Weapons abilities are activated by installing weapons systems – an example would be “Bombard”, which allows you to launch a powerful one-time attack. The higher your level, the more abilities you can unlock. While you have to install weapons systems to get the weapons abilities, ship abilities are unlocked as you level up, and you can then upgrade them. If an ability has 0 points, you won’t be able to use it.

Graphics

This is a 2D browser game. The ship designs of both the Federation and Klingons are pretty detailed, and buildings look futuristic, but also kind of boring. When it comes to background design, it looks like they opted to leave a lot of details out, but they do manage to evoke the right atmosphere. There are lots of planets, moons, and asteroids, though they rarely look all that different from one another. Base design gets really monotonous after the second planet, unfortunately, and just repeats itself. Combat animations are pretty minimalistic, and sometimes they don’t seem to match the actions they’re supposed to represent.

Sound

Lasers, phasers, proton torpedoes -- all weapon shave their own sound effects. The soundtrack itself is rather tranquil and restrained.

Tip

New players should definitely head to the most recently created server, where the difficulty level will be significantly lower. Your home base is a protected, so you can't be attacked there. Any bases on additional planets are unprotected. You should make sure to spread your bases out in such a way that you can quickly make it back home to have ships repaired or to load up on resources.

Summary

I’m sorry to say that in the brief time I played the game for this review, I quickly reached the limit of what you can achieve without shelling out any money. It can take over 24 hours to build a base after a while, and since it takes 100 deuterium to launch an expedition, and you quickly use up the little you have, it can take a long time to explore a single sector. What really bothered me the most were all the “pay-to-play” players out there.

But if these things don’t bother you, Star Trek: Alien Domain is a solid 4x strategy game set in the Star Trek universe. The ships can be some real eye candy for fans of the series.

Later in the game, they do give you materials more quickly to allow you to colonize more planets and explore the far reaches of fluidic space. (Stefan Bednorz; translation by Chase Faucheux)
