II. INTRODUCTION

Remember the times when you found yourself doing this?

TV: "The winner by TKO... Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield!
Player: "Crap! This is the 3rd time I lost! I need to do the cheap
shots!"

(played again, but lost)

TV: "The winner by disqualification... Evander "The Real Deal"
Holyfield!
Player: "GRRRR... useless game! I shouldn't have bought you!!! (sob)"

(tried again, but failed...)

TV: "The winner by....
Player: "Gahh!!! This is useless!!!"

Now, you won't just sit there and moan all day, would you? It's
either you use a GameShark, or get an FAQ. Among the two, which do
you think this thing you're reading is, the former or the latter?

...

Time's up! Okay, so it's an FAQ! This here's my FAQ which should be
your guide to the rough and tumble world of Knockout Kings 2000!
Thank you, thank you. Please have a nice day and read the whole file!

V. ESSENTIAL TIPS

Need help when fighting the computer guys? Always counted out by that
big lights-out punch? Drooling for the Championship Belt? Wanna be the
man? Wanna be a bad-ass champ? Then read these:

** ON CHOOSING YOUR GYM... **

- Choose your Gym well. You'll be sticking with them until your
career ends, so choose wisely!

- Each gym has it's own strengths. The gym in Germany, for example,
gives more Power points than the others, while the ones in the US
are kinda balanced. As said above, choose wisely!

** ON BEEFING YOUR CHARACTER UP... **

- Beef up a stat wherein you're low in. For example, if your Strength
stat is at 86 while your Speed is only 27, it's wise to beef up your
Speed first before Strength.

- Try not to skip the Interactive Training session. It will not only
raise some of your stats, it'll also teach you the not-so-basic
tricks in the game which, apparently, is also found in this FAQ.
However, if you skip it, you'll still get some stats raised, but
sometimes other stats decrease.

** TIPS BEFORE THE FIGHT... **

- In career mode, try to fight your opponents one by one. It may take
longer, but it allows you to train more.

- If you lose, keep your hopes up: this will let you beef up your
character more.

- Study your enemy's stats. Check out which stat he is low in, and
use that advantage. For example, if his Vitality is low, try to keep
throwing punches to tire him, just as long as IT HITS.

** TIPS DURING THE FIGHT... **

- Watch out for your Energy Meter (the green meter below your Life
Meter). If it falls to nothing, you can get hurt often (or that's
what I think) and get KO'ed eventually.

- Remember to duck and attack the opponent's body at least during
half of the fight.

- Use the flurries sparingly: your energy will drop down, leaving you
tired and open for a big shot. Stick to one-shot punches.

- Don't use cheap shots a lot of times per match or you'll surely
lose precious points! Just do them in Slugfest mode!

- Try to cut the opponent's face. You'll find out about the cut when
Al and Sean (the commentators) say your opponent just got cut with
a blow you just gave. For example, one of them will say "Looks like
he's cut!" That's a sign that your opponent's face is cut. If you
hit that part of his face, you will deal more damage.

** TIPS AFTER THE FIGHT... **

- If you win, it's not wise to butt-bounce all over the house, jump
off the window and shout "I'm the baddest man alive! Whoo-hoo!"
(Yeah, I know, there's something wrong in the sentence's grammar,
but it IS a quote, you know!)

** ON CHOOSING YOUR SPECIALTY PUNCHES... **

- These Specialty Punches (SP) are the punches a fighter specializes
in (duh). You will get to choose your own SPs when you play through
Career Mode. The professional boxers also have 3 of them. When you
use one during a fight, it will deal more damage. Try to use them
often to cut your foe's face and to deal more damage.

- Some bad choices when choosing your SP are the illegal moves such
as the Low Blow. That is, if you play by the rules...

** ON IDENTIFYING WHICH BOXER IS A SLUGGER OR A BOXER... **

- To find out if your character is Boxer-styled or Slugger-styled,
which doesn't really matter much, just check out if he can do an
Overhand Cross (the punch in which the fist curves over his head and
hitting point blank on his nose). How to do one? Just press Circle!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

VI. MOVE LIST

There aren't actually any moves like in wrestling games here, but
these may help a bit.

---------------
A. FLURRIES
---------------
A flurry is a fancy name for a combo. Here are the button
combinations and the punches your character will do if you execute
one of them. Also, I've included the types of boxer for each set of
flurries. Now, to see if he's a slugger or a boxer, just check out
the
---------------

(for Slugger-type boxers)

R1 + Triangle - (your fighter'll do these punches)
Rear Hook
Lead Hook
Rear Hook
Lead Hook
Rear Uppercut

R1 + Square - Lead Hook
Cross
Lead Hook
Rear Uppercut
Lead Uppercut

R1 + Circle - Lead Hook
Rear Hook
Lead Uppercut
Cross
Lead Hook

R1 + X - Overhand Cross
Lead Uppercut
Overhand Cross
Lead Hook
Rear Hook

(for Boxer-type fighters)

Nothing here yet! I'll have more on this when I have the time to
veer away from skewlwerk.

--------------------
B. PENALTY SHOTS
--------------------
Yes, the illegal moves in boxing. Hold R1 and R2 at the same time
then press one of these buttons:
--------------------

Triangle: Head Butt
Square: Elbow to face
Circle: Shot to Kidney
X: Low Blow (my personal fave)

(while in clinched position [see below])
press Triangle: Head Butt
press Square: Rabbit Punch
press Circle or X: Kidney Punch

*NOTE* Watch out for the ref's warnings. If he says "This is your
final warning!", don't do them anymore or else you'll be deducted
a precious point!

-----------------------------
C. CLINCHING THE OPPONENT
-----------------------------
Hugging (or clinching) your opponent will help regain lost energy and
waste some time. Press L1 and R1 at the same time when you're near
the opponent. Once you're hugging him, here are the buttons you can
press:
----------------------------

Square: Hook
Circle: Uppercut
No buttons pressed: regain lost energy (not life!)
Press X rapidly: let go

-----------------------
D. DEFENSIVE MOVES
-----------------------
A good fighting strategy is a balanced combination of offense and
defense. Here are the tricks on avoiding some damage.
-----------------------

Hold L1: Block attacks to the face
Hold L2: Block attacks to the body / duck

Hold L1 then press Up: Bob left
Hold L1 then press Down: Bob right

Hold L1 then press Forward: Shove opponent

Hold L1 then press Circle and Up: Bob left then throw jab
Hold L1 then press Square and Down: Bob right then throw cross

Hold L2 then press Up: Weave left
Hold L2 then press Down: Weave right

Hold L2 then press Triangle and Up: Weave left then throw uppercut
Hold L2 then press X and Down: Weave right then throw body shot

----------------------------------
E. OTHER USEFUL COMBOS / MOVES
----------------------------------
Knockout Kings 2000 now has combos that are pretty similar to those
in Ready 2 Rumble. To do them, just press the set buttons and you'll
be doing them in no time!

*REMEMBER* If you can't seem to do them, do the whole thing QUICKLY.
I repeat, QUICKLY. Don't take your time waiting for the punch's
animation to be over! Do it like you're typing on the keyboard with
a rate of, say, 104 words per minute!
----------------------------------

(for Slugger-type fighters)

X, X, Triangle, Triangle - (below are what the boxer'll do)
Lead Hook
Lead Hook
Rear Uppercut
Lead Uppercut

Hold L2 then press Square, Triangle, Triangle, Triangle -
Straight Jab
Rear Uppercut
Lead Hook
Rear Hook

Hold R2 then press Circle, X, X, X - Lunging Overhand Cross
Lead Hook
Rear Hook
Lead Hook

Hold L2 then press X, X, Circle, Circle -
Lead Hook
Lead Hook
Lead Hook
Overhand Cross

(for Boxer-type fighters)

Once again, nothing here yet! Don't worry, the combos are the same
as those for Sluggers, but the animation is different. I'll fill it
up as soon as I have the time to veer away from my schoolwork...
ugh...

VII. THANKS

Here's my very small list of creditable people:
- EA Sports for making this GREAT game. Love it!!
- My folks for buying the PSX and the games... including Knockout
Kings and Knockout Kings 2000!
- All the boxers in this game. Without them, this game's just a
dream!
- Muhammad Ali for being the best there is, the best there was and...
oh, wait a minute, that's Bret Hart's line. Well, you get the
picture. More kudos for letting a mall here in the Philippines
be opened in his honor. You guessed it right, it's Ali Mall (no
surprise there).
- These dear people need a LOT of thanks. Thanks to Mrs. Borja and
Mrs. Norma Sevilla for teaching me the importance of English in
our everyday lives and shaping me into what I am today... a small-
time FAQ author who wants to be the very best like no one ever was
(hmm... the last few words seem familiar...) Anyway, yes, they've
been (and are) my MAGIS Comm Arts teachers in Grades 4, 5 & 6 here
in Ateneo de Manila. Thanks!

And you, too, for reading this guide!
