It's hard to believe that Dead By Daylight, the horror game where survivors try to escape one dangerous, usually well-known killer, is releasing its 10th DLC; it seems like only yesterday I was getting eviscerated for the first time. As in all previous DLCs, you'll get a new killer, a new survivor and a new map. It sounds like the icing on the cake is that the devs are promising to answer a question that fans who have been begging for regarding dedicated servers.
Mathieu Cote, game director on Dead by Daylight spoke with Polygon in a recent interview, and there was a lot said about the new killer, survivor and the game in general.
“The Legion could be anyone in the crowd — your neighbor, a nice man who helped you cross the street. That’s the point. It’s the darkness among us. A lot of killers came from the past, from classic ’70s, ’80s or ’90s movies. More modern takes on horror have to do with dehumanizing mass killers who were the guy next door.”
The Legion goes ballistic when survivors group up or work together to restart a generator, so players will have to change their tactics and basically leave their friends behind (to die) in order to get away. The new survivor, Jeff, is sort of a natural foil to Legion, according to Cote: “He’s a great contrast to the killer, because he’s the big guy you see on the bus that you’re sort of scared of, but he’s an artist with a heart of gold. He’s a really nice guy. His powers have to do with collaboration and making deep bonds with people.”
She went on to talk about representation in the survivors, saying, “For us, it was important to be inclusive and have representation. Without being too dramatic about it, as soon as people are paying attention to what you say, you have a moral responsibility to make the world a better place. “They don’t all need to be likable, and they’re not heroes in any sense of the word,” says Cote. “Some of them are outright unpleasant, but all of them need to be real — if you were in a coffee shop, and Jeff was behind you in line, you wouldn’t blink.”
The developers also announced that in the summer of 2019, Dead by Daylight will go from a peer-to-peer game to having dedicated servers with the goal of increasing stability.
